It’s so easy to delay doing something we know that we need to do, simply because we don’t feel like it or because we don’t think we have enough time. We all have fallen victim to procrastination at one time or another. But just because it’s common, doesn’t mean that it’s ok, or that it’s even an excuse. What is Procrastination?
Procrastination is the act of delaying or postponing doing something. It’s not really a matter of laziness or a lack of self-control. But instead, it’s a type of self-harm that encourages one to avoid doing things that you know need to be done. Putting these things off and procrastinating is simply a refusal to take action.
Identify The Problem
Get to the root of why you’re procrastinating.
Make a Plan
Create a plan of action that you can stick to. It’s helpful to have a realistic idea of how long the task at hand will require and what you will need to get it done ahead of time.
Break it Down
For larger tasks, break it down into smaller actions.
Set a Deadline
Give yourself a deadline and it will motivate you to get things done. Now, make sure that your deadlines are strategic and that they set you up for success.
Set a time and date, and simply take action, even if it’s for five minutes.
Turn off your phone, your email notifications, anything that you must so that you can maintain your focus and reach your flow state. A flow state is when you’re completely immersed in the activity you’re doing, it’s optimal for productivity.
Focus on One Thing
Focus on one thing at a time, do not multi-task. In fact, multi-tasking is just another way of distracting yourself and procrastinating from truly getting things done.
Set the Mood
If you can, find a comfortable place that will inspire and motivate you to work. For instance, when I write, I like to go to coffee shops in my local neighborhood. Play some music, or listen to a podcast, do whatever will set your mood and that will encourage you to get it done.
Ease Your Mind
Put your mind at ease by practicing breathing techniques, releasing tension, or meditating.
